Music Review: Debut Single By Robots and Gods Will Leave You Wanting More!

4/3/2020

Picture
ROBOTS AND GODS are a Vancouver based rock band. Inspired by the 90’s Seattle scene, but adamant to push boundaries with a cutting edge new sound. They are as talented, if not more, than some of the classic bands that have inspired them.

In early 2019, they began pre-production on their first EP, which will be released in 2020. Their highly anticipated first single “MORE” was released TODAY, and my rock-radar and gut instinct tells me the band has a number one hit on their hands! Listen on Spotify:
https://tinyurl.com/r7dkqlc

“MORE” is pure HIGH-VOLTAGE, an exhilarating and melodic modern rock track that explodes out of the gate with the rapid steady beat of Ryan Smith’s drums and Bogdan Pyasta’s rich, soulful and dynamic vocals. Accompanied by Greg Smithwick’s skillful and hypnotic guitar riffs, Jerry Ocol’s steady, driving bass and Tyson Harrington killing it on synths. The intro featuring a ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ sci-fi-like electrical burst is an especially nice touch! Reminiscent of 90’s legends like Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana and more, Robots and Gods has infused their unique brand of music with those familiar 90’s sounds to create a 22nd century lively rock sound that is energizing, delightful and here to stay!

The song’s lyrics are extremely relatable, as we’ve all had times in our lives when we’ve done some soul-searching, wondered if this “is enough?” and had to make difficult choices:

“It’s time to take a stand
There is no way back now
How can I live my life
Without knowing why
Can someone stop this noise
I’ve gotta make a choice
I ain't got time, to waste”

Haven’t we all longed for more at one time or another, as expressed in the song’s chorus that has quite a catchy hook that will reel you in:

“And I want More, So much More
Give me more, I want more
And I want More, So much More
Give me more, I want more”

The slowed tempo during the mellifluous bridge conveys a soothing sigh of realization and is a testament to the band’s masterful skill of musical composition:

“It's been here all along
The sound of a familiar song
Hidden in a dream, hidden in a dream
I accept my fate”

As the song continues, the band takes us along with them as they are determined to find their way through the darkness:

“Looking for the hidden path
Through the darkness, make my way
Things ain't looking bright right now
I feel the strength fade in me
In the horizon I can see,
A familiar sight
I think I'm finally here”

Robots and Gods is making a refreshing and important contribution to the Vancouver music scene and is a Rock and Roll force to be reckoned with. “More” is definitely destined to chart at number one and is going to put the band on the international music map!

"MORE" was recorded at the legendary Fader Mountain Sound (formerly Little Mountain Sound) and Monarch Studios. It was produced and mixed by Elisa Pangsaeang (Yukon Blonde, Said the Whale), with additional mixing by Karl Dicaire (Big Wreck, Devin Townsend Project) and mastered by Randy Merrill (Muse, Imagine Dragons).

Music Review: Make It Your Next Best Decision To Stream Ria Jade’s HOT New Release

2/16/2020

Ria Jade is an award-winning sultry, soulful musician from Vancouver that takes influences from R&B, pop, rock, and blues and blends them into a tasteful twist. Her hot new release “Good Bad Decisions” is high-energy, emotionally-rich, passionate pop-rock at its absolute best, with a touch of raunchy-revenge-country-crossover reminiscent of Carrie Underwood’s chart-topping hit “Before He Cheats.”

Her voice in fine form, Ria serenades us about the heartbreak of a recent split and the desire to give her ex a taste of his own medicine. With its riveting rhythmic beat, masterful melody, driving guitar riffs and catchy chorus, its intoxicating hook will have you playing it over and over again. Consistent with Ria’s past releases, the song’s lyrics are highly relatable…anyone who has ridden the roller coaster of a romantic relationship can empathize. Although she knows it may be a bad decision, it feels good and much too satisfying to stop:

Maybe now it’s time for good bad decisions
Show you what you’ve been missing
I’m gonna make you cry, cry, cry

With unshaken confidence, Ria makes it clear that she is done being taken for granted and is ready to make her ex regret what he’s done:

Not the type with devilish desires,
But show me gasoline
And I’ll show you how to build up a fire
Oh well, if you’re done, so am I
Done with being played like a piano in the night

And haven’t we all felt this way at one time or another?

But now we bathe in regret,
And we speak in silence
With volumes left to be said

The change in melody and tempo, backed by the standout staccato guitar riff during the following refrain is especially innovative and memorable:

I’m gonna make you cry babe, mm
Tell you pretty lies, babe, hoo

The song then builds back up to its powerful ending:

Maybe now it’s time for good bad decisions
Show you what you’ve been missing
I’m gonna make you cry, cry, cry
Make you wish that you were mine, mine, mine
Maybe now it’s time to finish what we started
Show you how it feels being broken hearted
I’m gonna tell you lies, lies, lies
Make you wanna turn back time, time
For good bad decisions

As we used to say in the days of old-time radio, “Good Bad Decisions” deserves to chart at number one with a bullet and played on heavy rotation. Ria continues to set the quality bar higher and higher with each new release and remains one of Vancouver’s most accomplished musicians.

Vancouver Theatre Workshop: A TRIpTYCh OF ImPARiTieS asks, "Where Is The Line?"

11/6/2019

Picture
Where is the line? This is the central question of a trilogy of short plays to be workshopped at JBA Studios brand new Black Box Theatre:(https://jebbeach.com) Nov 29th to December 1st, 2019. Be it between Hollywood co-workers in #YOuTHREE, a maestro and his aspiring prodigy in DISCORd, or a pair of couples performing social-norms to their own ruin in SMiLE. The question remains throughout… Where. is. the. line?  The three short plays (15-20mins each), will run back-to-back. They are written & directed by Jax Smith & Helene Taylor, and will be performed by: Ashley Alexander, Jeb Beach, Robyn Daye Edwards and Alexander Krstich.

“Our work explores the hidden toll of emotional labour, and the negative effects of rigid gender-roles on both sexes” says, writer & director, Jax Smith. Her co-writer / co-director Helene Taylor agrees, “It’s at times cringe-worthy, at others heartbreaking, but these playlets draw from our own life experiences as women, and caregivers to loved ones in our mid-30’s and early-50’s.”

Raw and exposing, the work explores grief, mental illness, and the subtleties of sexual-harassment through acerbic hilarity, discomfort, and acute observation. The audience will be invited into an intimate scaled back, minimalist setting wherein, a cast of four dressed in black navigate first a funeral service, then a cafe and finally a cocktail party.

PLAY SYNOPSES
Picture
YOuTHREE is an acerbic bold response to those who nod to the #metoo movement and yet need their paycheques from the perpetrators. Three employees of a smarmy Hollywood executive attend his funeral and learn, not only the dead harbor secrets. Written by Helene Taylor.
Picture
DISCORd explores the work dynamic and power play between boss and underling. A prodigy pianist becomes unhinged when she interviews with a sexually predatory music director and is seemingly given her dream at the expense of her deceased mother’s legacy. DISCORd has garnered several laurels in its original form, as a short-film script including: Top 25 Table Read My Screenplay Austin, Semi-Finalist Screencraft Film Fund, Semi-Finalist Script Short Screencraft, Short-list Filmmatic Film Festival and is an official selection of the Cindependent Film Festival. Written by Jax Smith & Helene Taylor.
Picture
SMiLE is personal. It reaches into our most intimate relationships; some lost, some nearly-lost, all precious and painful. The male characters of this piece are crafted from our mutual experience of caregiving to very opposite-presenting depression. With one of us having lost her husband to depression, the subject-matter is sensitive to say the least. But one that is needed in these times when, “Eight men die by suicide in Canada every single day” (Craig Martin, global director of Mental Health & Suicide Prevention for the Movember Foundation). Written by Jax Smith & Helene Taylor.

The 17th Annual Garden State Film Festival (GSFF) will kick off this year’s screenings of over 245 independent films from around the globe with THE BIRD CATCHER on Friday evening, March 29th at 8:30p.m. at the iconic Paramount Theater in Asbury Park.

Inspired by true events and filmed on location against the backdrop of Norway's spectacular scenery, this feature film is a stunning and captivating story about survival of the spirit in the face of adversity. Set in Trondheim, Norway in 1942, THE BIRD CATCHER follows a 15-year-old Jewish girl named Esther (played with breathtaking brilliance by Sarah-Sofie Boussnina), who finds herself trapped and alone on a Nazi-occupied farm after attempting to flee the round-up of Jews. She is forced to conceal her identity, which in turn leads to a series of choices and consequences that shift the paths of those around her. The film uncovers a hidden slice of history that grips the heart and inspires us all at the deepest level. THE BIRD CATCHER reminds us that even in the darkest of circumstances, kindness still exists, and that good often can, and does, triumph over evil.

Black, is one of the film's Producers and is thrilled to be traveling to Asbury to open the Festival, “On behalf of everyone, we are truly honored to be selected as the opening night film. NJ born and raised, I’m thrilled to be able to screen our film at a festival which truly supports independent filmmakers/ producers like Garden State FF.“

The film was developed under Ms. Black’s shingle Garnet Girl, a company known for award-wining international co-productions and artist management. In addition to Ms. Black, much of the film's international cast and crew will be in attendance at the Gala and available for a Q&A following the screening.

Prior to the first screening, GSFF will launch its FIVE-DAY festivities with an elegant star-studded Red-Carpet Gala Networking Event and Cocktail Party, to be held Friday evening, March 29th, 7:00-8:15 p.m. at Asbury’s majestic Convention Hall. There's never been an audio production studio quite like this. Jam Room Communications boasts a team with more than 75 years of combined experience in the entertainment business, along with the very best microphones, recording and studio equipment, and software, including Source Connect Pro, the industry standard ISDN replacement for remote audio recording and monitoring. JRC has the capability to connect with other studios, talent and clients in real time, whether around the block or around the world. JRC’s talented voice actors are available to voice productions worldwide via other studios that also have Source Connect. In addition to its own exceptional and eclectic voice actor troupe, JRC is a full-service Communications Agency that offers studio and location photography, music video and commercial production, a royalty-free music library, graphic design and animation, marketing, publicity and social media services.

Under the guidance of award-winning voice actor and director, Steven Lance, Jam Room Communications offers producers an experienced, polished, and extremely versatile Voice Troupe who are able to provide more than 100 different voices—from straight delivery rich baritones, mezzo sopranos, and deep basses, to dozens of unique character voices all the way up to falsetto. Our actors, who can create original cartoon and video game voices, can also pull off spot-on celebrity and cartoon impersonations . . . not to mention a barnyard full of barks, meows, baa’s, bleats, whinnies, neighs and clucks, that would make even Don Messick and Frank Welker proud. Throw in Jam Room Communications’ royalty-free music and sound effects libraries of more than 35,000 tracks, and you’ve got yourself the most Hollywood audio production studio east of the Mississippi—and all at comfortable rates that will satisfy Production Accountants with even the sharpest of pencils. We also have two award-winning animators for music video, television and film production.

Jam Room Communications offers producers and directors a comfortable State-of-the-Art Recording and Production environment that bridges the gap between new school with the best of old school—offering the very latest in cutting-edge audio production software and technology, while still maintaining the best-loved legacy equipment and technologies allowing the flexibility to record and mix voice, and audio tracks that will not only meet—but exceed your exacting standards.
